How does a pothole announce itself?

A pothole starts as a crack that ponded water through one wet season, then grows with every storm and every wheel. Around Seattle the cycle runs fastest in winter, which is why holes seem to appear overnight. Filled early and properly, a pothole is a small job. Left open, it quietly undermines everything around it.

How does a pothole stay fixed?

A shovel of cold patch pressed into a wet hole is a stopgap. The repair that lasts treats the hole as what it is: a base failure with a surface symptom.

  1. Square the cut

    The hole is cut back to sound pavement with clean, square edges. A repair only holds if it ties into material that does.

  2. Deal with the water

    The base gets re-compacted and the water path that opened the hole gets addressed, or it opens again.

  3. Hot mix, compacted flush

    Fresh hot mix goes in and is compacted level with the surrounding surface, flush enough that you stop steering around it.

What does pothole repair cost to get right?

Less than the damage it prevents, and the estimate is free. The price follows the count and size of the holes, the depth of the base failure underneath each one, and whether the water path that opened them needs correcting. How quickly can a pothole be repaired?

Once scheduled, most repairs are one visit: cut square, base corrected, hot mix compacted flush, usually carrying traffic again the same day. Cold, wet stretches can force a temporary patch with the proper hot-mix repair to follow, and we tell you which one you’re getting.

What causes potholes in the Pacific Northwest?
Water and traffic working together. Rain seeps through cracks in the surface, softens the base underneath, and passing wheels break the weakened pavement apart. Our long wet season keeps the cycle running, which is why potholes here seem to appear overnight, and why keeping the surface sealed matters so much.
Why should a pothole be fixed quickly?
Because it only grows. Every rainfall carries more water into the exposed base, undermining the pavement around the hole. Potholes also damage tires and suspensions, and for a business, an unrepaired hazard in the parking lot is a real liability. A prompt, proper repair is always the cheaper path.
How do you repair a pothole so it doesn’t come right back?
The lasting fix is to cut the damaged area back to sound pavement with clean, square edges, deal with the water or base problem that caused it, then place and compact fresh hot-mix asphalt. A shovel of cold patch pressed into a wet hole is a stopgap, not a repair. We do the repair.
